Spurs v Everton – From the Archives
Tottenham travel to Goodison Park on Sunday in a fixture
that has seen a great deal of goals and entertainment over the years. In fact,
it’s a little surprising that Sky haven’t picked up on this one – choosing the
Manchester Derby (probably justifiably) together with West Ham and Liverpool
(great!!)
Maybe the fact that last season’s corresponding fixture
ended in a dire 1-0 home win has seen the cameras follow the Happy Hammers for
the third time in five league matches but it wasn’t always like this.
Who remembers those 3-2 Tottenham victories featuring
unlikely match winners for Spurs? Andy Turner in 1992 and Darren Caskey at
Goodison in October 1993?
The game back in 1974 was, however, another dull exception
but it’s shown here partly because it’s the only Spurs v Everton programme I
can lay my hands on. 74-75 was a strange season personally and I don’t recall
ever visiting the Lane at that time.
My father had simply refused to go, based on the
inconvenient truth that, in his opinion, we were crap. Before you take him to
task, a lot of fans his age had been brought up on the double team and had
hoped for a subsequent dynasty that would still last today.
As it turned out, the side started to fade at the end of the
60’s but still managed to win three trophies in the early 1970’s. However defeat
to Feyenoord in the 1974 UEFA Cup final saw Bill Nicholson’s resignation and started
a decline. The old man simply snapped. I didn’t blame him but we just stopped
going until I was old enough to travel on my own.
Anyway – this 1974 game – a 1-1 draw with Martin Chivers
scoring for Spurs and John Connolly for Everton. Not exactly a memorable
fixture between two great clubs but the same result wouldn’t be too
disappointing at 5pm this Sunday.
